MISÉRICORDE (MISERICORDIA) by Alain Guiraudie (France, 2024)
Jérémie, in his 30s, returns to his native town for the funeral of his former boss and village baker when a mysterious disappearance, a threatening neighbour and a priest with strange intentions add an unexpected twist to his stay. Guiraudie takes Hitchcock’s deadpan sensibility to another level with a genre-fluid crime story about murder, desire and suspicious mushrooms, set in a small village in the Massif Central. A cleverly constructed thriller with a darkly comedic touch. The film premiered in the Cannes Premiere section at the 77th Cannes Film Festival and received 8 nominations at the 50th César Awards, including Best Film.
