Legendary Guitarist Steve Newman who has been a member of world renowned groups like Tananas, The Aquarian Quartet, The Road warriors, Jika Nelanga and The Steve Newman Trio.
Steve Newman is one of the true stars of the South African Music firmament. From running the guitar workshops at Glastonbury Festival to touring the world as part of Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD Festival,
Steve has made South Africa proud. Even whilst his music is internationally successful it is as multicultural as only South African can get.
Of the best performances in memory have all involved Steve, whether solo, or with a band.
For this performance at Alliance Française de Durban, he is joined by a truly gifted young percussionist in Nish Pillay.
An upbringing in South Africa has meant that Nish is not genre bound and that makes him a perfect choice to share the stage with Steve Newman.
Pillay’s expertise on tabla and other drums adds depth and rhythm to every composition he collaborates on.
Nish has collaborated with South African legends like Ard Matthews (Just Jinjer) and Arno Carstens (Springbok Nude Girls) to name a few.
He was trained in South Africa in younger years, and then in Bangalore, India by a tabla master and has played music in India, Sri Lanka, Kenya and Rwanda and has extensively toured the nooks and crannies of South Africa.
